Deciding Where to Apply

This is always a tough call but keep in mind you are looking for the school that is the best for you. Don’t be swayed by rankings in magazines or how someone else perceives a school. Take the time to do your own research.

Below are some overall tips to consider in the application process:

  • Review list of schools who provide scholarships for City Year corps members and alumni: Before you apply be sure you to take a look at the schools that are City Year’s University Partners; and the schools that match the Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards. Not only can you earn thousands of dollars in scholarship towards your undergraduate education, but schools that have signed on as partners have already indicated an interest in recruiting City Year alumni.

  • Consider applying to a few "safety” schools, schools you are certain to get into, a few "target” schools, schools you have a better than average chance of getting into and a few "reach” schools you believe will be difficult for you to get into.

  • Visiting colleges is great. If you can’t visit schools, online tours can frequently give you an idea of what the campus is like. If you have never been on a college campus, visit one or two near your site.

  • Most cities in which City Year is located host college fairs and your site may organize College Fairs for corps members. Check in with your site’s LACY Point Person for more information.
