City Year is proud to partner with George Mason University College of Education and Human Development, the largest and most comprehensive graduate school of education in Virginia, offering 25% tuition discount per credit hour towards the Transformative Teaching program with Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

The Transformative Teaching program is a 30-credit cohort Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction for certified classroom teachers and other educators at all grade levels and content areas. The program supports teachers to develop their leadership skills and deepen their practice, including in problem-based learning, literacy, and alternative assessment. The ultimate goal of the program is to support the development of educators to be highly-skilled, reflective teacher leaders who are inspired and prepared to create empowering learning environments that meet the diverse needs of all students. The program is aligned with Columbia University’s Teachers College standards, the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards and the National Education Technology Standards for Teachers.

Eligibility & Additional Info

  • 25% Tuition discount.  25% discount on tuition per credit hour, for up to two City Year alumni or staff per year, renewable in subsequent years of the program up to five years.  Scholarship and other benefits can only be applied to the Transformative Teaching program.
  • Scholarships awarded to City Year alumni for at least one term of service and City Year staff members employed for at least two years.
  • Scholarships described above represent the minimum awards; applicants will be considered for additional merit-based aid based on the academic strength of the application.

To Verify Your City Year Affilition

  • Please email alumni@cityyear.org with “GMU Transformative Teaching: City Year verification letter request” in the subject line and include the site where you served and dates of service in the email.  This letter will be sent to the Admissions Office on your behalf. 

To Obtain Application Fee Waiver and Be Eligible for City Year Scholarship
