|Career Partner Spotlight: Alexis Doroski and TNTP Teaching Fellows|
Alexis Doroski '13 • TNTP Teaching Fellows
"One pivotal moment from my year of service was when I realized how lucky I was to serve with City Year."
Alexis Doroski is currently a fellow with teachNOLA through TNTP Teaching Fellows. She is teaching English as a second language and Spanish in a traditional public high school outside of New Orleans.
After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh she was unsure of her future interests. She knew that she was meant to work with students, but was unsure how she would best serve students. She was accepted to the City Year Greater Philadelphia corps of 2013. She chose to serve with City Year because although she was unsure of what education profession she wanted to pursue, she still wanted to start working with students.
City Year guided her in many ways. First it guided her through professional opportunities. She had many networking opportunities that allowed her to connect with important people in different career fields. Second, City Year provided her with information about job opportunities in education. She was also provided with contacts from these jobs. Alexis advises that current corps members be proactive and take advantage of all the opportunities City Year provides. Lastly, City Year helped Alexis learn how to be patient with others and be aware of how her actions affect others.
The most pivotal moment from Alexis’ year of service was
when she realized how fortunate she was to have the opportunity to serve with
City Year. "The days are long, the pay is minimal, but the people I met and the
experiences I gained have changed my life and helped me become a stronger and
more driven person,” says Alexis.
Alexis continues to stay in contact with City Year and plans on participating in the service days. After teachNOLA Alexis plans to continue serving as a teacher in New Orleans.
