Chad Baker '06, '07 • MSW Candidate, The Brown School ‘12
For Chad Baker, he hopes the next chapter in his life revolves around pediatric hospitals. Currently pursuing his Masters of Social Work at The Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, Baker is one step closer to these dreams. With a concentration in health and mental health, Baker will be well equipped to lead support groups, aid and engage children who find themselves in the hospital as a result of cancer.
Spending his corps year and senior corps year serving with City Year Boston, Baker saw firsthand the problems children faced. After his service years, Baker moved on to The Home of Little Wanderers where he was again exposed to children facing great obstacles; he resolved to ensure that children are guaranteed the right behavioral, emotional, and social development. His time at The Home of Little Wanderers coupled with his experiences serving with City Year Boston motivated Baker to pursue an advanced degree.
Baker has just finished up his first year at the Brown School and his jump from civic engagement to social work was a natural one.
"City Year really helped me realize that to get things done today and to make change you need to be proactive. In its essence, that is a lot of what social work is all about, especially at the community level – children can't always help themselves and you need to take things into your own hands to move forward”.
Baker has found a home in the Brown School. Finding the school fluid and flexible, it tailors ones course work around certain interests with a practicum allowing for field work, giving students a taste of what they have to look forward to in the future. Surrounded by professors who are the best in their field, a variety of exceptional classmates, and most notably a community of fellow leaders for life, Baker continues to be passionate about his studies and City Year. With ten City Year alumni in his class year at the Brown School, Baker is keeping service and idealism alive.
