|National Service Scholar: Janelle Rouse and Widener University|
Janelle Rouse '12 (Washington, DC) • give a year Scholar, Widener University
Why I chose Widener
My name is Janelle Rouse and I am proud to have served a year with City Year Washington, DC from 2011-2012; however today I am just as proud to be a Special Education student at Widener University.
Before City Year I went to college
inconsistently – alternating working one semester and going to school one
semester in an effort to pay for school.
While attending my previous school, I worked at various nursery schools
in my native city of Washington, DC. I found
joy in working with children and considered dropping my journalism major to
study education, but I still needed money for tuition and my school did not
offer a major in Special Education. I
joined City Year Washington, DC to give back to the community that I grew up
in. It was an experience that changed my
life for the better by instilling in me a sense of idealism, an appreciation
for diversity, and the mindset of a leader.
As my City Year service drew to a
close I knew I wanted to return to school to finish my education and become a
Special Education teacher. Since I
decided to change my major, I needed a school that was supportive to Education
majors and encouraged service and civic engagement. Widener was that school! Widener is civically engaged in the
surrounding Chester community and has been a nurturing environment to me as a
recently transferred student. As a Widener University student I have already
gained employment in my desired career field, joined an on campus volunteer
group that is civically engaged called the Presidential Scholars Corps/ Bonner
Fellows and received encouragement from all of my professors. This transition into school has been a
tedious process, but Widener University has made the process both enjoyable and
profitable to my educational experience.
