Mark Payne
Where he was in 1996: City Year Chicago Corps Member
Where he is today: Government and Community Relations Officer, Chicago Transit Authority
| “I believe in the power of City Year because it is where I developed as a leader. City Year tells the story of faith and truth in the place of fear and mistrust." | Mark began his career in national service with City Year Chicago in 1995 and he continues to effectively lead the Chicago community with the Near-West Side Community Development Corporation. As the Near-West Side’s Outreach Coordinator, Mark organizes the community planning process that creates a comprehensive Quality of Life Plan for the West Haven community. As a member of the City Year Chicago corps, Mark helped develop an after-school program and served as a teacher's assistant for 4th grade children at the Elliott Donnelly Youth Center in his native south side of Chicago. After serving a second AmeriCorps year with Public Allies, Mark went on to be the Special Projects Coordinator for the Mid-South Planning and Development Commission. Mark focused on the economic development of 43rd St. (popularly known as Muddy Waters Drive), home to the world renowned Checkerboard Lounge. In 1999, Mark received the All-AmeriCorps Award presented at the White House for his outstanding leadership in the Chicago community. He has recently transitioned to the Chicago Transit Authority where he serves as the Director of Government and Community Relations.
