Alumni Vision

Alumni Leaders for Life Logo
City Year aims to connect and mobilize our alumni as a community of idealists, civic leaders, and builders of City Year and the national service movement.  Our vision is that alumni take up the challenge to become Leaders for Life, to unite to address the needs of their communities and to continue to change the world long after they have taken off their City Year jackets.  There are more than 12,500 alumni who continue their commitment to building a stronger democracy as civic change agents in education, government, non-profit and corporate sector. We look to City Year alumni to not only continue acting on their idealism through service to their communities, but also by staying involved as active leaders in the Alumni Association.

Goals of the Alumni Association

City Year will harness the power of its alumni to:

1. Advance City Year’s mission and goals by tapping alumni as  an  inspired volunteer   workforce

The alumni network is a powerful extension of our corps and staff and a critical partner in supporting City Year’s mission and vision. Alumni can help deepen the impact of City Year’s service through participation in MLK Day, City Year camps, and service days; extend our reach in recruiting a diverse corps; support the   corps as mentors and workshop speakers; and forge strategic partnerships  through their organizations and companies.

2. Connect alumni as a community  of idealists

The alumni program seeks to build a network of social change agents such that it will support their idealism and allow you to tap each other for assistance on shared goals. Through panels, networking events, reunions, civic forums, and conferences, alumni have the opportunity to identify synergies between their organizations and support each other’s efforts.

3. Continue to invest in alumni as active citizens, civic leaders, and social entrepreneurs

The alumni program seeks to continue to develop alumni as active citizens through ongoing volunteer opportunities and leadership roles with Alumni Advisory Boards; to promote and recognize accomplishments through the Comcast Leadership Awards; and to invest in the professional and leadership development of alumni through forging partnerships with universities, non-profits, and companies.

Who We Are

“Leaders for life” is not simply the guiding principle of the City Year Alumni Association; it is what the data from one of the largest and most comprehensive studies of national service reveals about the men and women who serve community and country as City Year corps members.

Volunteering:  Nearly 70% of City Year alumni volunteer 10 hours a month, making them 65% more likely to be engaged in volunteer activities than similarly situated individuals in the national population.

Voting:  While fewer than half of 18-40 year olds in America vote, City Year alumni vote at a rate of 71%.

Leadership:  At least 90% of alumni reported that their City Year experience contributed to their ability to solve problems in their communities.

Membership:  More than 75% of alumni belong to a community group or civic organization, compared with 29% of similarly situated members of the national population.

Education:  81% of alumni completed additional schooling after City Year, including 83% of alumni who came to City Year without a GED or high school diploma
