Kicking Off Our 25th Year: City Year Detroit is Back to School
Our City Year Detroit AmeriCorps members are back in schools! For the 25th school year, AmeriCorps members will provide tutoring and mentoring for Detroit Public School Community District schools so that all students feel a sense of belonging and are learning in environments where they can thrive. City Year Detroit will be at a new school this year, Marion Law Academy, bringing our total impact to nine schools across Detroit:
- Bethune Elementary-Middle School
- Brenda Scott Academy (K-8)
- Noble Elementary-Middle School
- Gompers Elementary-Middle School
- Marion Law Academy (K-8)
- Durfee Elementary-Middle School
- Central High School
- Obsborn High School
- Cody High School
Prior to the return of students, our AmeriCorps members completed four weeks of Basic Training Academy (BTA). BTA is a start-of-year on-boarding experience designed to help AmeriCorps members learn more about City Year and the service they will be providing to the community, school, and students. AmeriCorps members spent time during BTA building community, learning about City Year’s mission, culture and values, and our approach to supporting student success.
We are inspired by our AmeriCorps members’ commitment to service and Detroit students. Hear why Rose, serving at Marion Law Academy, chose to serve with City Year Detroit:
“City Year gives a unique type of help to students. I was one of those kids that needed that kind of help back then. It seemed cool to actually give back to the community now that I’m grown and really understand what it is. I needed somebody extra, not [a] big brother, but somebody that’s old enough to be my big brother to let me know that everything is good and I can go to more than just the neighborhood schools and not leave my hometown.”
– Rose Outlaw

We are excited to witness the many ways City Year Detroit AmeriCorps members will impact Detroit students this school year! Follow our AmeriCorps members’ journeys at facebook.com/CityYearDetroit or instagram.com/cityyeardetroit.
