MORE MILWAUKEE STUDENTS GET CRITICAL SUPPORT THANKS TO WE ENERGIES FOUNDATION

City Year Milwaukee receives $25,000 grant from We Energies Foundation to support Milwaukee students

MILWAUKEE, WI (December 7th, 2020) – City Year Milwaukee, is pleased to announce it has received a $25,000 grant from We Energies Foundation. The funding will be used to expand City Year Milwaukee’s support and service in 13 Milwaukee Public Schools.

City Year, a nationwide education non-profit organization, helps students and schools succeed by providing holistic support to students, classrooms and schools. Locally, more than 100 City Year AmeriCorps members partner with teachers to help prepare students with the skills and mindsets to succeed.

This grant is an expansion of We Energies Foundation’s support of City Year Milwaukee’s Whole School Whole Child model. The grant will help fund social-emotional learning programming that is provided to students in partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools. Through this partnership, more students will have access to positive relationships, mentoring and holistic support provided by City Year Milwaukee AmeriCorps members.

“This partnership demonstrates our commitment to a brighter future in the communities we serve,” said Beth Straka, Vice President — We Energies Foundation. “Additional City Year “red jackets” in Milwaukee means more young leaders providing hope, inspiration, caring and support where it’s needed the most. We are proud to support City Year Milwaukee as they work hard to ensure students have the skillsets they need to succeed.”

“City Year Milwaukee is deeply grateful for We Energies Foundation’s consistent support of our AmeriCorps members and our service in Milwaukee Public Schools,” said Interim Executive Director, Dr. Victor Amaya. “Strong partnerships are crucial in assuring our AmeriCorps members have a lasting impact in Milwaukee and we look forward to having We Energies as a sponsor, and partner, in this work.”

City Year Milwaukee’s impact is made possible by a public-private partnership between corporations, philanthropic individuals, Milwaukee Public Schools and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

About City Year

City Year helps students and schools succeed. Diverse teams of City Year AmeriCorps members provide support to students, classrooms and the whole school, helping to ensure that students in systemically under-resourced schools receive a high-quality education that prepares them with the skills and mindsets to thrive and contribute to their community. A 2015 study shows that schools that partner with City Year were up to two-to-three times more likely to improve on math and English assessments.

A proud member of the AmeriCorps national service network, City Year is supported by the Corporation for National and Community Service, local school districts and private philanthropy. City Year partners with public schools in 29 communities across the U.S. and through international affiliates in the U.K. and South Africa.
