Welcome to New Orleans!

New Orleans is one of the most distinctive and lively U.S. cities, a melting pot of cultures, food, architecture and music. Our New Orleans team is committed to helping the students and schools of the city succeed.

Living in New Orleans

New Orleans is one of the most welcoming, fun and funky cities in the U.S. The city is incredibly upbeat and filled with people who are always willing to give advice and help their neighbor. New Orleans is known as the birthplace of jazz. You can hear local musicians playing throughout the city in music venues and second line parades alike!

New Orleans is also home to a very unique education system. New Orleans is the first large school district in the United States in which all public schools are charter schools. This unique educational climate combined with the warmth and resiliency of the New Orleans community makes this city an ideal location to spend a year making an impact.

Average rent for AmeriCorps members is between $400–$600/month. AmeriCorps members typically rent houses or apartments in Mid-City, Uptown/Garden District, Fairgrounds, Treme-Lafitte, Broadmoor and Milan. We recommend Zillow to search for apartments and Tulane Classifieds to search for roommates as you look for your new home.

City Year AmeriCorps members are encouraged to bring a personal vehicle or carpool with teammates to get around the city. The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority offers bus service throughout New Orleans but service is not comprehensive. They also operate four historic streetcar lines. The streetcars, first used in 1835, offer a unique way to see the city for tourists and residents alike.

There are plenty of cheap eats and free cultural activities around the New Orleans community or look into the Louisiana’s Food Assistance program.
