Playworks has developed a new online resource called, Recess Lab. This FREE resource draws on Playworks' years of experience working with elementary schools with the intention of helping principals, teachers, and students re-discover the power of play.  It includes a range of helpful tools and activity ideas for using play to help students develop critical social-emotional skills. One of the most popular tools that may be of interest to City Year AmeriCorps members and alumni working in education is Recess Checkup, a short, three-minute survey designed to help adults working in schools learn more about the state of recess at their school which may also unearth other findings about their prevailing school climate.

As you know, City Year has been collaborating with Playworks for the past few years. During the last two Summer Academies, all elementary-school based Team Leaders participated in Playworks' Power of Play training to learn more about how play can lay a strong foundation for a safe, healthy, and respectful environment for youth. These tools could better align some of our approaches to those of our school partners and, in turn, help increase the impact on school culture and climate.

This is a great resource that we hope you will share with your alumni networks and the schools in which you work!
