City Year Today

For more than 25 years, City Year has united young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. Today, we unite 3,100 AmeriCorps members to serve as tutors, mentors and role models, to help children stay in school and on track, and transform schools and communities in 28 locations across the United States, as well as through international affiliates in Johannesburg, South Africa and London and Birmingham, UK.

Helping Students Stay In School & On Track

City Year’s diverse young leaders help turn around low performing schools and keep students in school and on track to graduation. City Year deploys teams of full-time corps members in grades 3 through 9 to help improve student attendance, behavior and course performance – which research confirms is a way to significantly increase the urban high school graduation pipeline in America.

City Year young adults work directly with at-risk children throughout the entire school year, providing:

  • academic support
  • attendance monitoring and incentives
  • positive behavior support
  • after-school programming
  • in-school programs and activities such as assemblies and celebrations that improve the overall school environment

In addition to school-based service, City Year’s young leaders put their idealism to work for children and communities through youth leadership programs and community transformation initiatives.
