Career Partner Spotlight: Trina Tran and Urban Teachers

It was mid-way through her time at the University of Virginia that Trina Tran found out about City Year. She had a full plate studying psychology and political philosophy, along with policy & law, but was excited by the prospect of dedicating a year of service to better understand the challenges facing our education system.

Trina served with City Year Washington, DC in 2010-2011, where she worked with middle school children, teaching a social justice curriculum and leading them in service learning projects within their community. Through her time with City Year, Trina’s passion for education grew stronger along with her commitment to continue to make a difference in the lives of DC area youth. 

To build on her experiences with City Year and work towards closing the Trina with her CY Teamachievement gap, Trina applied to Urban Teachers, a Career Partner that seeks outstanding leaders with a high potential for delivering results in the classroom, like City Year graduates. Urban Teacher Center is an alternative teacher preparation program – working to train teachers and accelerate student achievement in the nations’ highest need schools.

Trina is currently in her first year of the four year program, completing clinically-based graduate coursework while co-teaching seventh grade pre-algebra and coaching the debate team at Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy. She will earn her teaching certification and program graduation if she can demonstrate her ability to improve student achievement by a minimum of one grade level by the end of each year – one of the many bold milestones resident teachers commit to attaining

Long term, she hopes to take her insights into education through her City Year and Urban Teacher Residency experiences back to higher education and pursue a PhD in Education Administration or Policy.
