University Partnership: The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University

City Year is proud to partner with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at Tufts University, a progressive graduate school focused on providing intimate educational experiences, opportunities to explore multidisciplinary approaches, innovative and rigorous research environments, and close mentoring from a faculty of academic distinction, offering a 25% tuition scholarship.


Graduate programs offered through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University are distinguished by their innovative courses, close student-faculty interactions and mentoring opportunities, and by the exciting collaborations that occur between disciplines and schools at Tufts. The school offers 14 doctoral programs and 32 master-level programs in arts and sciences. Faculty members, who comprise a community of scholars and researchers, welcome graduate students by integrating them into research projects and classroom teaching.

Eligibility and Additional Info

  • The award for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University will be equal to 25% of tuition for up to ten (10) City Year corps, alumni, or staff members per year.
  • Scholarships awarded to City Year corps members and alumni for at least one year of service and City Year staff members employed for at least two years.
  • A one-year deferral for students admitted to a graduate program who decide to serve with City Year before starting their study with Tufts' Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • The scholarships described above represent the minimum awards. Applicants will be considered for additional merit-based awards depending on the strength of the application.

  • Application deadlines vary by program (click here to see application deadlines).

  • Follow these instructions to identify your City Year affiliation, access the application fee waiver and be considered for the City Year scholarship:

       1. On the online application:

  • Check "Current City Year corps or Alumni" under Additional Information to identify your City Year affiliation.
  • Check "Yes" under Scholarship Aid section to confirm you are applying for Tufts scholarship Aid. Within Scholarship Aid, be sure to select "Tuition scholarship" under Scholarship Aid Request Type and "Teaching Assistantship" (if the program you are applying for offers and you are interested in being considered for an assistantship)

     2. City Year verification of service letter:  Please send an email to with "Tufts Application:
         City Year verification letter request” in the subject line and include the site where you served and dates of
         service. This letter will be sent to
 Tufts University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Office of Graduate
         Admissions and added to your applicant file.
