Career Partnership: Teach for America
Share |

City Year is proud to partner with Teach For America to fuel the number of teachers working in some of our country’s highest-need classrooms. This partnership reflects the shared visions and values of both organizations and our belief in the importance of fueling a movement of leaders that are working both inside the classroom and across sectors, to ensure that kids growing up in poverty have access to an excellent education. City Year strengthens an applicant’s competitiveness and chances for being selected for Teach For America. Teach For America’s 2019 corps includes, nearly 200 City Year alumni, many in their CY region—in some cases—their CY schools.

Application Resources:

  1. Best practices for City Year corps members applying to TFA (written by former City Year Team Leader and current TFA Chicago corps member, Kylie Martin) *Note that the application has changed in 2018 and no longer includes a phone interview

  2. Preparation tips from TFA (includes sample resumes)

  • Relocation funding
  • Pre-K-12th grade positions, including core subjects, bilingual, and special education
  • State certification and an optional Master’s degree
  • Access to network of 50,000 alumni and alumni leadership pathways (like policy and school leadership)

Application Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree by June 2018 (or earlier)
  • Minimum 2.5 undergraduate GPA
  • Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States or have received deferred action for childhood arrival.
  • No previous teaching experience required (all majors and academic backgrounds welcome to apply)

1. Is TFA the same thing as AmeriCorps?

Yes and no. As a TFA corps member, you are a certified employee of the school district you teach in. If you teach Chicago Public Schools, for example, your paycheck will come from CPS and you will earn the same amount as a traditional CPS teacher. However, you are also an AmeriCorps member; you may qualify to receive loan forbearance and an additional Segal Education Award in addition to your teacher salary.

2. Can I stay in my CY region?

As a CY corps member, you are given significant, additional preference to remain in your CY region as a TFA corps member (if that’s your first choice). However, you must still meet all of the specific requirements for that region and the region must have an opening for you—this varies by region.

3. Can I teach in my CY school?

Potentially! At TFA, principals make all hiring decisions. If you are interested in teaching in your CY school, you should schedule a conversation with your principal (and your manager) about potential openings as soon as you are accepted.

4. What if I’m considering Senior Corps as well as TFA?

Great—Apply to both! If you are accepted into both Senior Corps and TFA, you can receive a guaranteed one-year deferral to TFA to complete your second year with CY.

5. What if I applied to TFA previously?

We absolutely welcome you to reapply. Approximately 30% of applications from CY to TFA in 2015 came from CY corps members who had applied to TFA before.

“For the past two years I’ve served as a City Year Corps Member and Team Leader... I have loved the challenge and have been able to see first-hand the effect education makes on our young students. With Teach For America, I hope to continue to change the world, inspire and educate my students, and be a factor of closing the opportunity gap in America.”
