Q3 Partnership Highlights
Q3 Partnership Highlights
Year in and year out the work that City Year can accomplish is made possible by a strong group of dedicated and fearless AmeriCorps members, but also by the generosity of our corporate and community partners. These organizations not only show their support monetarily, but they donate their time, resources, and much more to show their alignment with our mission to provide equitable educational access to all students. Each quarter, City Year Philly (CYP) is pleased to highlight the recent work that our partners have done in support of our mission. Below is our third quarter roundup.
Comcast Court of Dreams Game – January 9
On January 9, AmeriCorps members who serve at Roosevelt Elementary School, members of CYP’s Civic Engagement team (will be linked), and City Year staff were invited to play a few friendly games of basketball at the Wells Fargo Center. This arena is home to the Philadelphia 76ers, so to have the opportunity to grace the court proved to be a one-of-a-kind experience. All games were refereed by Art Block, Senior Advisor for the Comcast Corporation and member of the City Year Philadelphia Site Board, who was also gifted a custom City Year basketball in honor of his and Comcast’s continued support of City Year Philly. Following the festivities, attendees had the opportunity to watch the Sixers do what they do best and win a game against the Boston Celtics.
American Airlines Terminal Tour – January 14
On January 14, American Airlines welcomed the AmeriCorps team from Southwark School and 20 of their students to Terminal A for a tour of the Philadelphia International Airport. Students were checked in as passengers, spoke with the control tower staff, saw the maintenance hangar, and had an opportunity to sit in the cockpit alongside pilots on an American Airlines Airbus. One Southwark student left the field trip declaring, “I’m going to work here one day.”
Faegre Drinker first mentor lunch – January 17
For the past five years, Faegre Drinker lawyers have mentored members of the CYP AmeriCorps team serving at Thurgood Marshall School. On January 17, they met for lunch to discuss career paths, review job application materials, and to build upon professional relationships.
Pancakes with Partners – February 27
On February 27, the AmeriCorps team serving at The Penn Treaty School hosted over 10 new corporate liaisons and prospective partners for a pancake breakfast and a short presentation from our Executive Director & Vice President Darryl Bundrige. Guests learned about City Year Philadelphia’s service model and upcoming events, then were given a tour of the school. The group also had the opportunity to hear stories and connect with several members of the AmeriCorps team at the school.
Comcast donates 200 books to Olney for National Reading Month – March 6
On March 6, 2020, members of Comcast’s Women’s Network and Black Employee Network donated over 200 books to the City Year team serving at Olney Elementary School. The books were primarily used as reading material for the school day, but some were sent home with students as gifts in support of the school’s National Reading Month literacy initiative.
