Educator Academy offers City Year alums

Teaching residency

Educator Academy (formerly Kansas City Teaching Residency) will recruit, prepare, place and retain passionate individuals to join the teaching profession. During the yearlong residency, you will receive:

• $20,000 annual living stipend plus health benefits and childcare assistance
• Missouri Teacher Certification
• co-teaching opportunities with collaborating teachers and experienced teacher educators
• master’s in teaching from the University of Missouri Kansas City (with free textbooks and access to student benefits)
• Segal Education Award of $6,495 upon successful completion of the program

After completing the residency year, residents agree to teach in Kansas City Title 1 schools for three additional years while continuing to receive personalized coaching and support. A three-year teaching commitment to Kansas City Public Schools earns graduates:

• membership in a supportive alumni network
• opportunities for leadership in schools and Educator Academy

Why City Year loves Educator Academy

Educator Academy is a nonprofit organization founded in 2015 to improve student outcomes by preparing, certifying and retaining highly effective teachers who are rigorously prepared and supported. It recruits individuals who are dedicated to making an equitable, antiracist education system a reality in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Educator Academy prepares aspiring teachers to become effective educators through an alternative route to teaching. By receiving a mentor teacher and master’s level coursework, teacher candidates develop the necessary skills and certification to make a difference in the lives of students attending systemically under-resourced schools in Kansas City.

Educator Academy sees a Kansas City where quality education is guaranteed for all kids. It envisions a Kansas City education system that has dedicated, diverse and prepared teachers who understand and meet the needs of all students. The City Year experience is a strong indicator of future success as a Teacher Resident with Educator Academy, and serving with City Year strengthens an applicant’s chances of being selected as a Teacher Resident.
