Our favorite parts of D.C.

Here, at City Year DC, we know how amazing it is to be able to live and serve in the Nation’s Capital. From its great job opportunities to its world class museums, there’s just so much to love!

You can get anywhere from here

As our nation’s capital, Washington, DC is a major transportation hub. Serviced by three major airports and the historic Union Station, a major hub for both Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses, DC is perfect for transplants who want convenient options for travel home and to new places. For commuters or those who just want to explore DC’s various neighborhoods, the Metro subway is a reliable and affordable option, with lines that connect both urban and suburban parts of the metropolitan area. AmeriCorps members serving in Washington, DC even receive a $200 SmartTrip Metro Card each month!

Access to world class museums – for free

In DC, you don’t have to break the bank in order to have access to its world-renowned museums and monuments. As you stroll along the National Mall, you can’t miss the Smithsonian Institution, consisting of 17 museums, galleries and a zoo (located in the Northwest part of the city), all with free admission. There’s the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of Natural History and so much more. With so many options, you’ll always have something fun to do on the weekends!

You can get serious about your education

Thinking about furthering your education? Well, Washington, DC is the perfect place for you. Whether you want to pursue your undergraduate or graduate degree, you’ll be able to choose from countless area colleges and universities—20 of which are located in the city of DC! City Year AmeriCorps members who successfully complete a year of service also are eligible for scholarships to some of the area’s best universities like Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and American University.

Washington, D.C. is an amazing place to start a career

If you’re not looking to pursue or further your education, Washington, DC is still an amazing place to start your career. Many businesses like Lockheed Martin, Capital One and Hilton Worldwide are headquartered in the area – and then of course there’s the Federal Government which alone employs 140,000 people locally. As a bonus, there are tons of employers in the area that participate in the Employers of National Service program and are specifically looking to hire National Service alumni.

There are 48,144 talented students who need your support

Living in the Nation’s Capital certainly comes with a lot of perks. But we believe serving a year with City Year DC to help thousands of students in DC Public Schools reach their full potential and set ambitious goals for their future takes the cake! By applying to serve with City Year DC, you’ll not only be able to experience all the fun things the city has to offer but you’ll also become a part of the city’s legacy of addressing civic challenges through service.
