Celebrating AmeriCorps Appreciation Month in Kansas City

March 13-19 is recognized nationally as AmeriCorps week, but we extend the celebration of our AmeriCorps members to encompass the entire month of March. In Kansas City, we are proud to be able to recognize and acknowledge our Corps for their hard work and dedication to service.

City Year’s work wouldn’t be possible without the selfless commitment of our AmeriCorps members. Whether they’ve put their own education or career on hold to serve a cause greater than themselves or they’re using City Year as an opportunity to solidify their next steps – we are incredibly grateful for their service.

“I think what impresses me most about our AmeriCorps members this year is their sense of purpose and their commitment to their students,” says Jessica Herman, Managing Director of Impact. As school buildings reopened to in-person learning this year, administrators, teachers, and school partners have worked tirelessly to keep students safe and engaged in learning. “This year’s AmeriCorps members have shown an incredible amount of dedication and resilience toward serving their students. They have stepped up to the pressing needs our students have this year, and they have worked tirelessly to meet those needs. I cannot imagine our schools without this year’s AmeriCorps members in them – they have truly gone above and beyond this year to support our students’ social-emotional and academic pursuits.

As a small token of our gratitude, we got creative in the ways to appreciate our AmeriCorps members for all they do every day to support students. City Year partners provided homemade baked goods, students, staff, and community members acknowledged AmeriCorps members with letters of gratitude, and we hosted events where Corps members could relax and recharge. With the help of our Board members and Team Sponsors, we were able to provide our teams with free tickets to sporting events, gift cards, and swag.

A year of national service can present challenging moments, but many more that are rewarding as AmeriCorps members make a critical impact on the students, schools, and communities they serve. Though we strive to honor our AmeriCorps members’ service every day, we recognize that sometimes a small gesture can go a long way.

From all of City Year Kansas City – thank you.
