Five nonprofit management scholarships for City Year alums

As a City Year AmeriCorps member, you gain first-hand experience working at a nationally recognized and respected nonprofit. During your service year you’ll learn to develop plans to meet the community’s needs and measure the impact of program implementation. It’s no wonder that 13% of our 2017 alums express interest in working in the nonprofit sector after completing City Year.

“I don’t think I would have been prepared to launch my own nonprofit if not for the training I had from City Year. It was like business school for nonprofits,” City Year Miami alum Binsen Gonzalez, who founded City Thoughts, said.

City Year empowers you to lead your peers, build relationships with students and the communities you serve and partner with other community-based organizations. To take your nonprofit management skills to the next level, here are a few of our university partners who share City Year’s commitment and passion for pursuing social justice and offer exclusive scholarships for City Year AmeriCorps members, alums and staff.

Brandeis University | Heller School for Social Policy and Management
Waltham, MA

The Heller School was founded with the purpose to advance careers committed to social change and its student body—of which one in five have a background in national service—fuels this commitment. Heller offers guaranteed partial tuition scholarships of at least 50% to all City Year AmeriCorps members, alums and staff who are admitted to a qualifying master’s degree program, such as the Master of Public Policy and social impact Master of Business Administration.

The Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences—in addition to being the ninth ranked school of social work in the United States—is at the forefront of educating future leaders in nonprofit management. The Mandel School allocates up to 10 annual scholarships to recipients from the City Year community who are admitted to the Master of Nonprofit Organizations (MNO) program or on-campus or advanced standing Master of Social Work (MSW) program. Scholarships are valued at $27,000 for the MNO and advanced standing MSW programs and $36,000 for the on-campus MSW program.

Claremont Graduate University | Drucker School of Management
Claremont, CA

Claremont Graduate University is the only comprehensive university in the country dedicated entirely to graduate-level education. Alums enrolled in a number of their degree programs are eligible for annual scholarships, including those admitted to the Master of Arts in Art Management. All admitted and eligible City Year AmeriCorps members and alums are awarded a $12,000 fellowship, which is renewable every year until the degree is complete.

New York University (NYU) | Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service
New York City, NY

NYU Wagner is committed to preparing public service leaders to translate ideas into effective, meaningful and lasting positive actions. Every year, NYU awards up to two City Year alums with 50% tuition discounts, which can be applied to coursework related to their public service degree program. The scholarship is renewable in the subsequent years of the program for both full-time and part-time students.

University of Pennsylvania | School of Social Policy & Practice
Philadelphia, PA

The pursuit of social justice is at the heart of the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy (Penn SP2). Knowledge-building activities along with innovative educational and research programs reinforce their vision of active student engagement in their own learning. They’re proud to award one City Year alum enrolling in their Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership program each year with an $18,750 scholarship. Penn SP2 offers additional scholarships if you’re interested in studying or applying to their social work or social policy programs.
